Day 35, August 15...Haines Junction, YT to Haines, Ak to Skagway, AK to Whitehorse, YT

I left Haines Junction this morning to clear skies and temperature around 38 degrees.  I had every bit of clothing I have with me on, and I had the heated gear turned on high!

The scenery all day was beautiful.  Here is a shot at Haines Junction looking south:

It is about 150 miles to Haines where I caught the ferry to Skagway, so I pushed pretty hard to get down there.  But I was able to stop at a few places and get some nice pictures:

These two locations were about 50 miles or so south of Haines Junction:

This is a glacier about 20 miles north of Haines:

I got into Haines about 10:15 and needed to be at the Ferry Terminal by 11:00, so I stopped in downtown Haines and grabbed a coffee and pastry for breakfast.  Here are a couple shots of downtown Haines, Alaska:

The Ferry Terminal was about 5 miles out of town, so after gulping my coffee, I headed over there.  The harbor area is pretty striking:

And this is the SS Minnow pulling into the dock:

We loaded up and headed out for Skagway, about one hour away by boat.  Skagway, of course is the place where the gold rushers of 1898 landed so they could head up to Dawson City on the Yukon river.  Well, today, three gigantic cruise ships landed, apparently with the same idea in mind;

With all the crowd and the 120-mile trip I had to get to Whitehorse, I headed on out of town and up Highway 3 over the Chilkoot Pass.  Here are some shots along the way:

As you can see, this is some pretty nice scenery.

Tomorrow, it's down the Alaska Highway to Watson Lake for the night, and then south down the Cassiar Highway on Thursday.

Miles today:  265
To Date:  8,177
