Day 34, August 14...Tok, Alaska to Haines Junction, Yukon

I had looked at the weather forecast last night and it showed rain ending by about 5:00 this morning in Tok.  Well...not quite.  I poured all night and I didn't break out of the rain until about 2:00 this afternoon well into Canada.  I left Tok about 7:30 or so and headed east/south on the Alaska Highway.  From Tok it's about 90 miles to the Canadian border crossing and the scenery (what I could see of it, anyway) was similar to what you see in a lot of Alaska.  Here are a couple shots taken somewhere between Tok and the border crossing:

As I crossed over into Canada, I began to see more mountains:

Kluane Lake lies along the Alaska Highway and is about 50 miles long.  It is fed by meltwater from the Kaskawulch Glacier:

The Alaska Highway winds its way around the lake for probably 30 miles or so, and the views are very nice:

The lake has an interesting geological history as it actually reversed its flow about 300-400 years ago as the Kaskawulch Glacier advanced and then receded:

Well, anyway, I thought it was interesting.

If you didn't believe me about the weather, here's proof:

One very dirty bike!

Tomorrow, it's down to Haines, Alaska, about 130 miles, then onto one of the Alaska Ferries to Skagway, then north from there over Chilkoot Pass to Whitehorse for the night.

Miles today:  291
To Date:     7,912
