Day 29, August 9...Anchorage to Girdwood to Portage to Whittier

I left this morning and headed south on the Seward Highway to some scenic areas.  First stop was Girdwood, home to the Alyeska Ski Resort.  Let me tell you, I've been skiing for 40 years and this hill is way beyond my capabilities.  Steep!  Anyway, they have a gondola that goes up to the top of the slopes, about 1,000 feet below the Alyeska Peak.  Here are some pictures from the top of the mountain:

There are six Glaciers visible from the top of the mountain, and here are five of them:

OK, the Glaciers aren't as big as they once were.

Here are a couple more shots:

This is Turnagain Arm:

This is the resort hotel from the top of the mountain:

And this is the Gondola that we rode up on:

Next, I headed about 10 miles south to the (former) town of Portage and the Portage Glacier.  The town of Portage was wiped out in 1964 in the Alaska earthquake, which was centered in Prince William Sound.  The town of Whittier, which is right on the Sound, was also severely damaged.  Nevertheless, there is some beautiful scenery here.

This is Portage Glacier as seen from the Visitor's Center:

Portage Glacier extended all the way down to the lake about 30 years ago.  Adjacent to Portage Glacier were a couple more:

Just up the road is a 2.5 mile-long railroad tunnel that also serves as an automobile tunnel to connect with the town of Whittier.  Whittier was established in 1941 as a deep-water port for supplying American troops in Alaska, connecting with the Alaska Railroad through a tunnel that was built in 1942-43.

Whittier is now a cruise ship port, as well as having a commercial fishing industry.  Here are a couple shots of Prince William Sound:

This is unusual, but there are only about 200 residents of Whittier during the Winter.  They all live in one apartment building:

Behind the building, if you look carefully, you'll see runoff from Glaciers up on top of the hill.

Kind of a brisk, cloudy day, but some really pretty sights.

Tomorrow, weather permitting, I'm headed to Hope, Alaska...never been there.

Miles today:  146
