I'm spending the next couple days in Fairbanks seeing the local sights. It's rained pretty much constantly today, and we seem to have a storm hovering over us through tonight. So...I decided it was too cold and too wet to get on the bike, and tried LYFT to get from the Super 8 to one of the local attractions that I enjoyed when I was here last in 2010, the Fountainhead Classic Auto Museum.
A word about LYFT...it worked like a champ. $12 each way to the museum and the drivers were there to pick me up within 5 minutes. Both, coincidentally, were retired from the Army. One was headed home to Maryland in a month or so and the other is a helicopter pilot who's staying to get his civilian certifications to fly. I didn't mind giving them each a nice tip.
The Fountainhead Museum is owned by a local businessman and has over 80 cars on display, with restoration being done on two cars while I was there. The museum is absolutely beautiful and features lots of information about early automobiles in Alaska and a few film clips of people motoring around Alaska in the early days.
Anyway, in no particular order, here are a few shots I took inside the Museum:
This was interesting. It's a Fordson Tractor that has been converted with large screws that allow it to travel in snow:
And this is a Model T truck that has been converted with skis on the front wheels and tracks on the rear wheels:
Anyway, it is a beautiful museum with a wonderful contingent of classic automobiles.
Tomorrow looks like it's going to clear off a little, so I'll be out and about looking at other local sights.
