Day 24, August 4...In Fairbanks

Today is my last day in Fairbanks, so I took in a few of the sights that I hadn't seen yet, and one that I had.  Pat, Patrick, and I came to Fairbanks in 2003 on an Alaska Cruise (highly recommended, by the way) and we took the Alaska Railroad train from here to Denali and then on to Anchorage for a couple days before boarding the ship in Seward.  Anyway, I stopped by the Fairbanks RR Station, and it's rather pretty:

About five miles north of town, the Alaska Pipeline comes through the area on the way to the port at Valdez.  There is a nice little visitor display, and you can actually walk up and touch the pipeline itself:

And this is a "pig", sent through the pipeline along with the oil to keep the pipe clean and to electronically inspect the safety of the pipe itself:

The final stop of the day was Pioneer Park.  The Park was opened in 1967 to celebrate the centennial of the purchase of Alaska from the Russians.  The Park is nice, with an Air Museum, a Railroad Museum, and a Museum containing information about the local area.  All were interesting, and I got a few pictures.

This is the outside of the Air Museum:

And a couple pictures from inside:

Anyway, the Park was pretty nice and full of people and especially lots of kids.

Tomorrow, I'm off the Anchorage, about 400 miles south.

Miles today:  35
Total:         5,899
