Day 20, July 31...Dawson City, YT to Tok, AK

I left the Bunkhouse hotel in Dawson City this morning and took the ferry across the Yukon River to the Top of the World Highway. The Highway runs about 70 miles along the ridge tops of the mountains to Boundary, AK, where the US/Canada border is located, and then another 40 miles to Chicken, AK and another 70 miles after that to the Alaska Highway.  The scenery along the highway is really something special, and here are a few shots taken this morning at various points along the highway.

Here is Dawson City from across the river on the highway:

Here are some shots taken along the highway between Dawson City and the border:

Around noon I made it to the big metropolis of Chicken, which has everything from lunch to a motel to gas to RV parking:

From the time soon after the Klondike Gold Rush in 1898 up until the 1970's, there were dredges working to find gold and silver by dredging massive amounts of soil and rocks from creek beds and depositing it off to the side of the creek or river.  In Dawson City, there were miles of these piles of rocks alongside the road.  The Pedro Dredge was active in the Chicken area until the 1950's and is still there, stranded in the remains of a creek:

The scenery today was beautiful, the road was terrible.  The entire length from Dawson City to Chicken was a dirt road with occasional patches of loose gravel and a lot of washboarding, potholes, ruts, and so forth.  Made for a pretty harrowing ride in those areas.

Anyway, enough griping about the roads.  I had one picture that I took facing the sun, but I think it turned out pretty well:

I'm in Tok, Alaska for the night and will be in Fairbanks tomorrow for three days. Having a great time!!

Miles today:  191
Total:          5,615
