Day 66, September 15...Dodge City, KS to Emporia, KS

Before leaving Dodge City this morning, I took in the major local attraction...the Boot Hill Museum.  This was pretty interesting.  It had been built in 1958, which those of us of a certain age would remember as being during the time that the TV series "Gunsmoke" was at its height of popularity.

That aside, I did enjoy the visit and did get a few pictures:

Here is the world-famous Long Branch Saloon, run by "Miss Kitty" and frequented by desperado and lawmen alike:

And here's the bar-keep, waiting to pour you a glass of rot-gut whiskey:

And, a shot of the furnishings:

Here is the town pharmacy:

And, if you didn't catch it, take a look at the sign next to the baby:

I bet it would fix your toothache!

There were a few church-goers, apparently:

And, of course, a school:

I'm pretty sure my grade-school had that same picture of George Washington in each classroom.

Dodge City was interesting and really seemed to be a pretty nice place.

From there, I headed east on US50 toward Emporia.  US 50 through Kansas is mostly 2 lanes and passes through quite a few small towns along the way.  Mostly flat farm and cattle-grazing land, but overall a nice ride.  One thing...there was a continuous wind from the south that must have been 35 miles an hour, with gusts quite a bit higher than that.  I wonder if this is unusual.

Tomorrow, it's up I-35 and across on I-70 to Columbia, MO.  On Sunday, I'll be heading to Villa Ridge, MO to visit with my aunt Gladys.
