Day 46, August 26... Grant's Pass, Oregon to Fort Bragg, California

I left Grant's Pass this morning and headed south on US199 toward Crescent City, California, on the Pacific Coast.  US199 runs through part of the Redwood forests and some of these trees are unbelievable:

You can get some idea of the size of these trees:

I rode on to Crescent City and the Battery Point Light House, built in 1856 and the first lighthouse on the California coast.

South of Crescent City, US 101 winds along side the coast, inland a number of miles, up and down mountains, two lanes, three lanes, four lanes...quite the thoroughfare.  Here are a few pics I took along the way:

Near Miranda, Ca is the Avenue of the Giants, several miles of road that wanders through several Redwood groves:

At Leggett, CA US101 diverts to the east and California Hwy 1 starts down the coastline all the way to San Juan Capistrano, south of Los Angeles.  But...Leggett is also known for one other attraction:

The guy never did make it through.

South of Leggett, CA 1 is like riding the Tail of the Dragon for 50 miles.  It wore me out, before finally approaching the coast near Rockport.  Here are a few pictures taken along the coast between Rockport and Fort Bragg:

This made my day, though:

It's a 1964 Jaguar XKE and belongs to a couple from Vancouver, BC.  THE most beautiful car ever made!

Tomorrow, I'm having to change my plans due to road closures on CA 1 further down the coast in several spots.  Not sure yet which way I'm going.

Miles today:  328
To Date:  11,403
