Day 7, July 18...Schreiber, On to Thunder Bay, ON

It had been spitting rain off and on all yesterday afternoon and continued until about 11:00 this morning. I left Schreiber in temperatures around 50 degrees, heavy cloud cover, and light on-and-off rain.  I backtracked about 10 miles toward Terrace Bay to the Aguasabon River Gorge, where after a short hike (uphill both ways) I came to the gorge itself.  There is a pretty substantial waterfall into the gorge and a hydroelectric plant downstream where the river flows into Lake Superior.

I thought it was worth the short backtracking.

As it was yesterday, Hwy 17 runs along the shore of Lake Superior and is pretty hilly, with some pretty impressive views.

My next stop was near the town of Ouimet at the aptly-named Ouimet Gorge.  Getting to the Gorge was about a 20-mile drive in each direction, but it was pretty spectacular.  There was a hiking trail (of course) about a mile long that took you to two "viewing pods" about 1/4 mile apart.  Here are a couple pics:

It was pretty impressive, with the gorge being about 500 feet deep from the viewing pods.

The final stop today was Sleeping Giant Provincial Park, about 25 miles east of Thunder Bay.  The park was pretty and pretty well packed with campers, but I did get to see the Sleeping Giant in person:

Look carefully and I think you can see how the mountains got their name.

I headed on into Thunder Bay after this, got to my room, got my laundry done, and I'm ready for tomorrow.  Heading toward Manitoba in the morning.
