Day 17, July 28...Fort Nelson, BC to Watson Lake, Yukon

I left Fort Nelson this morning and headed north on the Alaska Highway toward Watson Lake, about 320 miles away.  The skies were gray and it spit rain off and on all day, but other than that, the weather was certainly better than what I experienced in 2010.

About 25 miles north of Fort Nelson, the highway becomes pretty much the way it will be all the way to Fairbanks.  The road is now paved with what we call at home "chip seal", basically gravel thrown on top of tar with the expectation that traffic will eventually smooth it out.  And, the road got narrower and the shoulders pretty much disappear.  Despite that and a few rough spots, I had no trouble getting around.

The terrain was really pretty today.  Here are a few shots 50 or so miles out of Fort Nelson:

These were taken near Summit Pass, the highest point on the Alaska Highway at 4300 feet:

Today was my day for wildlife wandering on the road.  This is a Big Horn Sheep about 50 miles or so from Muncho Lake.

Here was a Moose grazing alongside the road:

And just a couple miles down the road were four mountain goats, Mom, Dad, and the two kids.  Here are Mom and one of the children:

About three hours later, I rounded a bend and came up on this:

In addition to what I can prove with pictures, I came upon a second Moose alongside the road, a second herd of Buffalo, and four Black Bears spread across about 10 miles of road.  Honest Injun!

Here are a few more scenic shots I took today:

And to prove I'm here, here is the famous Signpost Forest in beautiful Watson Lake:

Very nice day today.  Tomorrow it's on to Whitehorse, Yukon, about another 300 miles away.

Miles today:  325
Total:          4,786
